Not too far from the suggestive São Jorge Castle, right in the heart of the Alfama district, there is the majestic Lisbon Cathedral also called Sé, short for Sé Patriarcal or Igreja de Santa Maria Maior.
It represents the main religious site of the city of Lisbon; it is a majestic Romanic-Gothic church from the XII century built on the ruins of an ancient mosque by order of Dom Alfonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and it soon became the symbol of the Christian reconquest.
The original project of the church followed the Romanesque style of that time; however, the church was subsequently modified with the addition of Gothic elements after the earthquake of 1344 and with baroque decorations added in the 17th and 18th centuries. Finally, it was partially restored after the earthquake of 1755. The result is a mix of styles that we can admire still today.
Before entering the Lisbon Cathedral admire its majestic facade built in French Romanesque style with two solid towers standing against the sky; a huge rose window triumphs at the center of the composition on the upper side of an arch.
The interior is simple and austere; it is made of three aisles with a Romanesque transept. During your visit to the Cathedral don’t miss a very unique piece, that is to say the 18th century monstrance of D.Joâo V, a gift from the King to the Cathedral. It is an exceptional object of gold art, made with 17 kg of gold and over four thousand precious stones.
